Striped catfish, also known as rainbow shark, is a catfish native to the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. Like the American Strait Catfish, it is very suitable for aquaculture and is widely planted in domestic and export markets. Since 2002, when a law restricting catfish labels to domestic species was passed, catfish cannot be sold as catfish in the United States. Unscrupulous importers and fishmongers sometimes sell them as a related but superior species, basa. Other names include SWAI in Thailand and tra in Vietnam.
